Dispraise Of Poetry - Poem by Jack Gilbert
When the King of Siam
disliked a courtier,
he gave him a beautiful white elephant.
The miracle beast deserved such ritual
that to care for him properly meant ruin.
Yet to care for him improperly was worse.
It appears the gift could not be refused.
he gave him a beautiful white elephant.
The miracle beast deserved such ritual
that to care for him properly meant ruin.
Yet to care for him improperly was worse.
It appears the gift could not be refused.
Contra la poesía –
Jack Gilbert
Cuando el rey de
Siam despreciaba a un cortesano
le regalaba un
hermoso elefante blanco.
La milagrosa
bestia requería un ritual tal
Que cuidarlo
apropiadamente significaba la ruina.
Pero cuidarlo
inapropiadamente era peor.
Parece que el
regalo no podía ser rechazado.
